The Hindi alphabet (हिंदी वर्णमाला) has three parts: स्वर (vowels), which can be pronounced on their own; व्यंजन (consonants), which need a vowel attached to be pronounced; and मात्रा (matras), the shortened vowel signs joined to a consonant, such as आ becoming ा in का.
